A murder investigation is now under way in Portugal following the death of a Derry businessman in the Algarve yesterday. Paul Houston (51) had been on a golfing holiday with his wife and friends in the village of Alvor. His body was found lying in the street at around 5am yesterday. Mr Houston ran a designer shoe store in Derry. It is thought he had been beaten to death in what may have been an attempted robbery and police are awaiting the results of a post mortem.

They are investigating the possibility he was set upon by two men as he returned to the accommodation he was sharing with his wife and another couple.

The group had been socialising together earlier but it is thought Mr Houston stayed on after the others left. Mr Houston lived in Greencastle, Co Donegal, and was president of the local golf club where members expressed their deep sadness.

In a statement, Mr Houston's brothers Kevin and Terry said: "The family are shocked and devastated by the untimely and tragic death of Paul.

"All of the relevant authorities are working very hard to ensure the return of his remains as quickly as possible.

"We are very grateful for their assistance to his family at this sad time. They added: "Paul was a very special person and his loss is devastating to our family, his many friends and the community in which he lived and served.'

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is providing consular assistance.
