A man is in protective custody after providing crucial information which could lead to the capture of the killers of British spy Denis Donaldson. Former Sinn Fein administrator and spy, Donaldson (56) was gunned down at his remote cottage near Glenties, Co Donegal in April 2006.
Earlier this week, the Real IRA claimed responsibility for the murder, which is still under garda investigation. A spokesperson said yesterday that "for operational reasons" gardai were not in a position to discuss the claims. It has since been claimed by Republican sources that the man is under protective garda custody after leading investigators to the hiding place of the sledgehammer used to break down Donaldson's door.
Gardai may now be able to recover some forensic evidence, but it could take some time. According to reports in Derry and Donegal, the man, in his 20s from Derry, had survived a number of attempts on his life. In one attack, gunmen opened fire while he was sitting in his car but he fled the scene, while a pipe bomb was left at his home a month earlier.
