A TOUT at the heart of the Real IRA could bring those responsible for the murder of Denis Donaldson to justice, The Donegal Democrat can reveal.
Mr Donaldson, himself a British agent, was shot dead at a family cottage at Cloghercor near Doochary in April 2006.The Real IRA claimed at the weekend that they had murdered the former senior Sinn Fein official.
A former dissident republican from Derry is believed to be in protective custody in the Republic after giving information to the Garda on the murder of British agent Denis Donaldson.
It has been claimed that the man, who left Derry last year and had been living at a house in St Johnston in Donegal, led detectives to a sledgehammer used to break down the door of the remote Glenties cottage where the former Sinn Fin official was shot dead in April 2006.
The Real IRA admitted it carried out the killing this week in a statement read out by a masked man during the 32 County Sovereignty Movement's Easter Rising commemoration in the City Cemetery.
It has been claimed that the man now in protective custody was the victim of a gun attack, believed to have been carried out by the Real IRA, at his home in Transalla, outside St Johnston, in September last year.
Several months later a pipe bomb device attached to the oil tank of the man's house partially exploded. It is thought the man, who had previously been a member of the Real IRA, left the area after the attack.
Detectives investigating the murder of the former Sinn Fin official are said to be examining the sledgehammer in the hope of finding forensic evidence which will lead them to the Real IRA killers.
A Garda spokesperson refused to confirm or deny if a man had been taken into protective custody or whether any items relating to the Donaldson murder inquiry have been recovered and said that the investigation is continuing.
