Police confirmed last Thursday that two men, aged 19 and 26 had been arrested in Lagos (about 20 kilometres from Alvor) by Portuguese detectives in connection with the murder of Irishman Paul Houston. The two men are believed to have been preparing to travel by bus to Lisbon before flying to Brazil. Their nationalities have not been confirmed, though indications are they are Brazilian nationals. According to police, 15 detectives have been working day and night to track down the suspects.
The two suspects appeared before a judge in Portimão on the day of their arrest. One of the men was remanded in custody and the other released pending subsequent investigations.
An autopsy report released last week showed that 51-year-old Paul Houston died from a post-traumatic brain haemorrhage caused after being beaten by the two men. It also said no marks or wounds caused by weapons were found. Little is known about the circumstances under which the attack took place, but police are leaning towards a botched robbery, though no official confirmation of this has been received.
Paul Houston, a successful businessman and avid golfer from County Donegal, Ireland, had been on holiday in Alvor, in the Algarve, with his wife Celine and another couple, Phillip and Marian Devlin. Three days into their stay the party had gone out to the village for an evening.
When the others decided to call it a night and return to their hotel, the Dom João, Mr. Houston carried on by himself until the early hours of September 6th. His wife contacted police when by mid-day the following day, Sunday, he had not retuned. Three of the Houston’s four grown-up children flew to the Algarve a few days later to be at their mother’s side. The family then returned to Ireland last Friday.
Paul Houston’s funeral was held last weekend in Greencastle, Co. Donegal, where thousands of mourners attended. Greencastle parish priest Fr. Paddy O’Kane told mourners of how he met Mr Houston, president of Greencastle Golf Club, a short time before he headed off on the ill-fated holiday with his wife and friends
