The alleged leader of what police called the world's biggest hashish ring was arrested Monday as part of an international drug sweep that involved U.S., British, and Spanish authorities. In a midday raid at a seaside mansion on the Mediterranean island of Majorca, police arrested three Britons, including Dennis Howard Marks, the suspected leader of the gang.
The arrests followed a weekend raid on a cove and villa along Spain's northeastern Mediterranean coast during which authorities recovered 17 tons of Morocco-grown hashish worth $33 million _ the biggest drug seizure in European history, a regional government spokesman. A spokesman said it was not immediately known if their arrests were linked to the vast weekend hashish haul near the coastal town of Lloret del Mar, 37 miles north of Barcelona. Police found 16 tons of hashish in an coastal, underground catacomb equipped with conveyer belts and electronic scanners. Another ton was found at a nearby villa.
