A man was "caught red-handed trying to procure weapons" for the Real IRA, a bail hearing was told yesterday.
Desmond Kearns from Tannaghmore Green in Lurgan, Co Armagh, is in custody on a charge of conspiracy to possess firearms with intent. During a compassionate bail hearing in Belfast's High Court, a Crown lawyer said that in 2004, the 42-year-old accused and his wife travelled in Europe buying cigarettes. The prosecution claimed this was "to fund a terrorist organisation".
A lawyer for Kearns said he wished to attend his son's confirmation. Lord Justice Girvan said Kearns would be released between 9am and 6pm on Saturday. He added: "He can attend the chapel and the restaurant then go back to Maghaberry."
