Three men wearing balaclavas burst into a house at Carrickmore on the road between St Johnstown and Lifford shortly after 9pm and shot one of the residents in both legs. The wounds were not life threatening and the injured man was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital for treatment. Two of the raiders were armed with hand guns while the third was carrying a pickaxe handle. There were two other men and a woman in the house at the time of the incident but they were not injured. The men escaped in the wounded man's white Vauxhall Cavalier which was found burned out in Lifford. After technical examination at the scene the car was taken away for further tests. While the house was being examined by forensics officers other members of the gardai searched the road.
Mayor of Donegal County Council, John Boyle, said: "I totally condemn this attack. I don't know what the cause behind it was but it shouldn't be happening regardless."
Speaking about the wounded man's condition a spokeswoman for Letterkenny General Hospital said: "He is in a comfortable condition." A spokesman for the Garda Siochana confirmed: "Gardai from Letterkenny Garda station, Donegal are investigating an incident which happened at St. Johnstown, Donegal after 9pm last night." "Three men, two armed with hand guns and one with a pick axe handle and all wearing balaclavas, entered a house and shot a man in both legs. "
